BEIJING IWHR CORPORATION (BIC) is EXPERT FOR RUBBER DAM PROJECTS

Rubber dam and Beijng IWHR Corporation (BIC)

Beijing IWHR Corporation (BIC), a state-owned company subordinated by China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR), is No 1 powerful in China in water and hydropower sectors. BIC has built rubber dams in foreign countries since 1994, involved in manufacture, feasibility study, design, construction and installation.
BIC is a holding company of manufactories to produce and provide rubber dam bags rubber dam bags, anchorage elements, pump house and drainage system according to the requirements of customer. We are especially experienced in site installation, commissioning and operation, According to different local civil work, foundation and geographical condition, climate feature, humiture of the project, we adopt effective solution to guarantee the project quality in due time.
In 1994 we introduced the technology of rubber dams in Bangladesh by constructing 3 pilot rubber dam projects. Up to now we have constructed 24 rubber dams in Bangladesh. And we built rubber dams in Vietnam and Thailand as well. In South East Asia, we replaced and installed the damaged rubber dams supplied by Japanese companies.

The great project of rubber dams built by BIC in Bangladesh was made TV program, by Phoenix TV which is one of leading media companies in Asia, and shown on Phoenix TV at Phoenix InfoNews Channel and Phonix Chinese Channel at 8:00-8:30pm on June 17, 2004.

Rubber Dams Built by BIC in China
In China since 1965 there have been more than 1,000 rubber dams built for different applications, such as irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, groundwater recharge, tidal protection and fresh water storage. By now, China has accumulated rich experiences on rubber dam technology with damming height ranging from 1m to 6m. The longest one is 1200m in length and the longest life of the bag is 23 years. Now about 40 rubber dams are built every year in China. It is in China that there is the largest number of rubber dams built

Rubber Dam We constructed in Bangladesh

BIC has constructed 24 Rubber Dams in Bangladesh. The construction has recommended that Rubber Dams are appropriate and cost effective water conservation structures in small and medium rivers of Bangladesh both in non-tidal and tidal locations.

Two-side Water Retaining Rubber Dam built by BIC in Bangladesh

In some cases, it is necessary for rubber dam to retain water at both upstream and downstream. There are many differences between single-side and two-side water retaining dam, such as, layout of anchor line, design of hydraulic structure, etc.

The 84 m long 3.5m high water filled Bakkhali Rubber Dam in Bangladesh was built by BIC as a two-side water retaining rubber dam. The Bakkhali river at the dam site is in a tidal environment not far from the Sea and separates downstream saline water as it impounds upstream sweet water flow in the river and tributary channels. The dam conserves fresh water in the upstream side and prevents flow of saline tidal water from downstream. The conserved water will be used for irrigation by lifting through low lift pumps. The dam will be operated in winter for cultivation of 6000ha Boro rice in January to May.

Rubber Dam We constructed in Vietnam

We built the Vietnamese first rubber dam on September 1997, Now, we have built several rubber dams in Vietnam.
In Ding Quan - Dong Nai Province. Ba Giot rubber dam is used mainly for water supply and irrigation.

In Yen Mo district, Ninh Binh Province, Yen Dong rubber dam is used for flood protection and irrigation.
In Yen Tai commune, Yen Mo district, Ninh Binh Province, Cau Hoi rubber dam is used as spillway.

Rubber Dam BIC constructed in Thailand

One of cases in Thailand: This is an Air-Inflated Rubber dam in Thailand. Its rubber dam bag supplied by a Japanese company, however, which was broken and damaged in 1999. BIC re-built the dam in 2000. The work included replacing of the rubber dam bag, installation and rejiggering of control system.

What is Rubber Dam

Rubber dam is a new type of hydraulic structure compared with steel sluice gate, and made of high-strength fabric adhering with rubber, which forms a rubber bag anchoring on basement floor of dam. Filling water or air into the dam bag, rubber dam is used for water retention. Emptying water or air from the dam bag, it is used for flood release. Rubber dam has many advantages, such as low cost, simple hydraulic structure, short construction time, perfect seismic performance and effect of stopping leading, and low resistance to water flow in flood season.

Rubber dams have been used in China over the past 40 years as cheaper water conservation structures compared to conventional gated structures like barrages especially in small and medium rivers.
Rubber Dams have wide prospect in the world since they can be used especially for irrigation, and for pisciculture, hydropower generation, environmental improvement and recreation purpose. Rubber Dams are not known to have other than beneficial impact on environment and ecology.

Advantages of Rubber Dam

Saves huge amount of steel, cement, timber and other construction materials. This brings the economy.

The dam body can be fully deflated to lower it to flat level on base floor so that flood flow passes without any obstruction.

Rubber dams can have spans as long as 100 meters without dividing piers. This provides full width of active cross-section of the river channel to release flood flow.

Load of dam body is evenly distributed on foundation. This lessens treatment of foundation soil to only nominal or none.

Construction and installation are quicker compared to conventional gated regulating structures.

Total investment cost is 30-40% lower than that of conventional gated regulating structures.

Rubber dam can adapt to differential settlement of foundation.

  Low operation and maintenance costs.

Types of Rubber Dam

Rubber Dam Construction

Constructing rubber dams consists of designing and constructing stages. At the stage of designing, experts and engineers design rubber dams and then at the construction stage, various parts of dams such as: body, concrete structures, equipment and machinery, pipes, anchorage bolts and control system are manufactured.

Material of Rubber Dam

The rubber dam tube is made of strength canvas and rubber layer which ensure tightness of the rubber layers. The rubber layers encompass outer, middle and inner elements for different functions. This kind of rubber is well resistant against sharp objects, pieces of ice, stone and vibrations caused by river overflowing.

The outer layer is made of the special rubber material characterized wear, sunlight, heat and ozone-resistance.
The middle layer is used for protection of canvas and for connection of two or more canvas with rubber layers.
The inner layer is used for protection of canvas and characterized watertight and airtight features.ht.
